Dear Families,
Values in Action – During week 7 and again this week, we had the privilege of greeting some of our new families to our school during the first of our 2023 enrolment interviews. During these enrolment interviews, we are often asked about the learning that happens in the subject of Religious Education. This is a good question. We are indeed a Catholic School, so it is an obvious question, but it is also a good question because things have changed a lot in this regard.
Many of you might recall your Religious Education lessons. If you were at a State School here in Queensland, you likely had weekly religion lessons from a local volunteer or chaplain from a local church. If you attended one of our catholic schools, depending on your generation, your lessons were possibly delivered by one of the nuns or brothers connected to your school. No matter what the style of lesson or type of school, they both shared a similar approach; we were telling children what to believe, telling them what was ‘good’ and what was ‘bad’. While the intent was good, it was about telling children what to believe and listing the rules that should be followed.  How things have changed!
This year, our teachers are building on what they already know and do well in Religious Education lessons through the ‘Illuminate Strategy’. This is a way of teaching the religion curriculum that invites children into conversations about what they are hearing about this person called ‘Jesus’. These conversations and learnings centre around what He was trying to teach and, importantly, how this is applicable to our lives now. In our school every day, and not just in our Religion lessons, we aim to tie what we learn about Jesus with what His actions mean to us. Specifically, we tie our daily actions to our school’s values of ‘hospitality, integrity, compassion and excellence’.
Our school’s ‘2022-2025 Strategic Plan’, as one of its goals, mentions; “We deliver a Religious Education Curriculum that is relevant and engaging for students”. Our Year 6 students are currently learning about the diverse ways different organisations support those in need through what has been traditionally known as ‘works of mercy’. Where once they would have sat in class and tried to memorise the content, in their work this term, they are putting what they are learning into action by helping those in our local community who are in need of help. Talking to our Year 6 learners, they speak energetically about what they are doing and why. As parents, we are trying to build good people. At Sacred Heart, we have the privilege, of partnering with you in achieving this goal.

Athletics Carnival – Next Friday, 17^th June is our school’s Athletics Carnival. A note was sent out through the ‘Parent Portal’ earlier this week outlining some of the details of the day (it is attached again in our newsletter this week for your reference). This day focuses on participation and fun. Lunch orders for children can be ordered through ‘Flexischools’ (by Tuesday, 14^th June) and a bake stall will be in operation for everyone for morning tea and lunch for you, our visitors. Please ensure that if your child wishes to buy something from the bake stall for morning tea, that they bring some money. We look forward to seeing you next Friday.

Good Luck Oliver – Oliver Anderson was recently selected as part of the Darling Downs Schoolboys AFL (Australian Football League) Team. He is in Maroochydore this week competing in the Queensland carnival. We wish him fun and a safe a journey. Well done Oliver!

School Officers' Day
On Wednesday, 8^th June, our school community dedicated the day to show our gratitude for our wonderful School Officers. We recognise the invaluable work and contribution these hard-working people make to our school. Thank you so very much!

Sacred Heart Day
Today, we dedicate the whole day to celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart. The Sacred Heart, also known as the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, wherein the heart of Jesus is viewed as a symbol of “God’s boundless and passionate love of mankind.” Due to the cold weather, we reduced the time that students and staff were at Queens Park and we had a wonderful day celebrating all things Sacred Heart. We really do have many reasons to be grateful to be such a welcoming and caring community! Photos from the day will be on our Socials and also in our Week 10 newsletter.

State of Origin Free Dress Day
Many students and staff donned their maroons and blues to show their support for the 2022 State of Origin teams while also supporting the Base Services Toowoomba. Thank you to our Year 6s for organising such a worthwhile event to help raise money and awareness for the amazing services Base Services Toowoomba provide for the most vulnerable in our local community. Thankfully the best team won on the day, and we’ve had a great start to the 2022 State of Origin series! As a school community we raised $361 for Base Services Toowoomba which is enough to purchase 3 backpack beds.

Class Awards

Year 1 Fire Education

Last Friday, the Year One students had their final visit from our local firefighters who taught them about fire safety.  The children were informed of the important steps to follow if they ever encounter a fire…

• Call 000: Ask for the fire department and give your name and address (including the suburb).
• ‘Don’t hide, go outside’ and ‘Get down low and go, go, go!’

The children also had the opportunity to explore the fire truck and got the chance to use the powerful fire hose.  Thank you to our local firefighters for teaching the children about fire safety.  As you can see by the photos, they thoroughly enjoyed it!

From Year 2/3A

Welcome to Week 8.
Over the past couple of weeks we have been busily trying to complete assessment tasks ready for report cards. The children have worked admirably and I am so proud of their efforts.
This week has been a big week with lots going on. Of course, we ended the week celebrating Sacred Heart Day. This day is always so much fun being able to get out of the classroom and enjoy the fun activities. 
Next week is the Athletics Carnival so homework will be due again on Thursday.
We will also need all library books returned by Thursday.

From Year 6

This term, during Religion, the students have been learning about Jesus’ New Law, Social Justice and the call to put Jesus’ love into action. The students have been working in groups to create Social Justice Projects to show Jesus’ love and help five charitable organisations across Toowoomba. The students have named this initiative the “6B Winter Appeal”.

Base Services
On Wednesday a group of Year 6 students organised a Free Dress Day for State of Origin Game 1. All money collected is going straight to Base Services Toowoomba to purchase Backpack Beds for the homeless – refer below for the amount raised from Wednesday. (Thank you to our very generous community for supporting this cause). These beds are given out to the homeless, so they stay warm during the cold Toowoomba nights. These backpack beds are the most awarded, single person, ultra-light weight camping tent in the world – which is also a backpack!

Rosies
One group of students has planned out a project to collect and gather non-perishable food and drink items for Rosies - Friends on the Street. Rosies aims to provide friendship and unconditional acceptance to those doing it tough with a warm smile and a hot drink. It is their mission to ensure that no Queenslander feels left out or disconnected from their community. “Rosies reaches out to those most in need, people who are homeless or at risk, lonely, and socially isolated within our communities.” If you would like to help the Year 6 students make a difference in our Toowoomba community, they will happily accept packets of soup, noodle cups, tins of milo and cordial.

Tony’s Community Kitchen
Tony’s Community Kitchen in Toowoomba helps men, women and children of all ages from all cultural backgrounds, that are homeless or at risk of homelessness and experiencing economic stress or social isolation. One of our amazing group of seniors have decided to collect toiletry items for those people who use Tony’s Community Kitchen. They are seeking shower gel, shampoo, roll-on deodorant and new towels, if you are able to help with this cause please donate to 6B.

Civic Assist
Civic Assist coordinates several services and initiatives, working with people of all ages and from all walks of life. Civic Assist Toowoomba have their own Winter Warmth Appeal running until the end of June. They believe communities are made great by those who work together for everyone’s benefit. A group of students decided they wanted to organise a collection of warm clothing, blankets, and flannelette sheets to help contribute to Civic Assists Appeal. If you have any excellent condition pre- loved items you think would help out this group, we will willingly accept them.

St Vincent de Paul Society
St Vinnies a Catholic organisation, support vulnerable Australians facing hardship every day. One group of 6B students has created a project to collect books, toys and clothing for disadvantaged children within our region. This group will happily accept any of your excellent condition unwanted/unused children’s items to pass on to Vinnies.

We have put the call out for anyone who is interested to donate to our chosen causes by simply:

• Collecting children’s toys and clothes for St. Vincent de Pauls.
• Collecting warm clothes, blankets, jumpers and socks for Civic Assist.
• Collecting hygiene products for Tony’s Community Kitchen.
• Collecting non perishable foods and drinks for Rosies.

Any donations can be left at the school office or brought to the Year 6 classroom. We thank everyone who has donated so far and we look forward to reporting our final donations and when they are delivered to the local charities. Thank you to everyone for their generosity for those people who are less fortunate than us.

Our class celebrated Queensland Day on Monday (6/6/22) - completing a Queensland mapping activity and creating some quirky sunnies reminding us why Queensland is the best state. 

As per our charity focus above, Wednesday this week saw many of the students dress in their supporter colours for the first State of Origin match. The funds raised in our 6B class alone totalled $140 – already more than enough to purchase 1 backpack bed, thanks to the additional generosity of Oliver Anderson’s Family for donating $50 alone. Our total school funds raised are $361. We will purchase 3 backpack beds as soon as we can for some very needed warmth in this very cold weather. Thank you everyone for supporting our fundraiser in a fun way to celebrate your favourite state.

Our year 5 & 6 girls have started netball training this term to ensure they know the rules and are competitive for our annual Catholic Education Week Netball Carnival that is held in Term 3. Thank you to Mrs Weber for her time and expertise in training the students during her breaks.

Sacred Heart Day was held today. Thank you to our seniors for their assistance with the younger students and for their leadership on our special day. A big thank you to Mrs Lucas for her organisation for this day.

Sacred Heart Idol

Congratulations to all the students who auditioned for Sacred Heart Idol. We were very impressed by the standard this year!
Each student that auditioned will receive a feedback sheet about how they can improve for their next audition. Please collect these from Mrs Menkins in the office.
The lunchtime rehearsals are only for students who were successful in getting through to the finals. Ms Runciman will be available during the times listed below to help students improve their acts and confidence for the finals. This is optional and students can attend if they want assistance.

2023 School Fee Billing

Please be advised that school fee billing for 2023 will change.  Currently school fees are generated each term - (Term 1, 2, 3 & 4), however, in 2023 all families will be billed for three terms - (Term 1, 2 & 3).  This will mean that the school fee amount will be more per term but only over three terms.  For example if your yearly school fee amount is $1800, you will be billed $600 per term for three terms. 
You will still have the option to pay school fees over the entire school year, through direct debit or a bank deposit into the school’s bank account.
If you have any questions or need clarification, please don’t hesitate to contact the office.

Student Absence and Tuckshop

It has come to our attention that when students are absent from school for any reason and a tuckshop order has been placed, this order has been filled.  If your child is absent from school, please cancel the tuckshop order by 9:00am.  Thank you for your support.

Highlights from the Sacred Heart Parents’ and Friends’ Meeting

The P&F met on Monday, 6^th June for an Ordinary Meeting.  Participants attended in person and online.
The following are some of the highlights:

• By the time you read this the Meet and Greet and School Disco will have been held with the P&F heavily involved in the food and drink catering for the event.
• Additional volunteers for the bake sale associated with the Athletics Carnival (Friday, 17th June) are required to help serve the food. If you can spare the time to help out with serving that would be appreciated.
• A new member of the P&F brought along information on “Buddy Benches” which are spaces where students can go when they are not coping or need some help without actually having to directly ask for it. Sitting on the Buddy Bench is a signal that they need a friend or help from an adult. The P&F will look further into this idea at its next meeting.
• The tuckshop is up and running and parents are getting back into the swing as orders are increasing each week. The tuckshop is a service run by the P&F to assist parents. There is a need for more volunteers, especially on Tuesdays. If you can spare some time to volunteer it would be very much appreciated.
• The P&F is making good progress in documenting all event procedures to make it easier for future volunteers. Great work is also being done to get all documents in digital form and stored on OneDrive for universal access.
• The next P&F meeting will be on Monday, 1^st August. There is no meeting in July given the school holidays. All parents and carers are welcome to attend.
